Installing Baseball for Windows and MakoJo Software programs with Vista

1.  Do the installs using a User Account with Administrative rights.

2.  If you will be installing the Bill James (FanPark) Encyclopedia, install it first, before Baseball for Windows.
        A.  Do not allow the setup to run automatically when you insert the CD.  Instead, list the files on the CD.
        B.  Right click on setup.exe and choose "Run as Administator".
        C.  After the install find the file "WinBJEBE.exe" in the directory in which you installed the Encyclopedia.  Right click on it, choose "Properties" and click on the Compatibility Tab.  Click on "Use Compatibility Mode" and select "Win2000" from the dropdown box.  Also check "Run as Administrator" at the bottom of the Tab.   Click on "Apply", then "OK".

3.  Install Baseball for Windows.

        A.  Do not allow the setup to run automatically when you insert the CD.  Instead list the files on the CD.

        B.  Right click on setup.exe and choose "Run as Administator".  If you get any messages telling you that a file being installed is older than the existing file, answer "Yes" keep the existing file.
        C.  After the install find the file "winbb32.exe" in the directory in which you installed Baseball for Windows.  Right click on it, choose "Properties", click on the Compatibility Tab.  Click on "Use Compatibility Mode" and select "Win2000" from the dropdown box.  Also check "Run as Administrator" at the bottom of the Tab.   Click on "Apply", then "OK".
        D.  Repeat step 3C for "windraft.exe", "winlm.exe" and "winstats.exe".

4. Install Wizard for Windows.

        A.  If you have WinWiz on another computer, you actually don't need to "install" wizard.  Just copy these files from the Baseball for Windows directory on the other computer to the Baseball for Windows directory on the Vista computer:  "winwiz.exe", "winwiz.hlp", "winwiz.ico" and "leagdat.wiz".
        B.  If you must install WinWiz, list the files on the installation floppy and then follow steps 3B and 3C, substituting "winwiz.exe" for the file name in 3C.
        C.  Note that WinWiz needs to find "winbb.exe" before it will install itself.  But the Baseball for Windows file is now called "winbb32.exe".  You can get around this by creating a new file in Notepad (it doesn't matter what it contains, so just type your name) and saving it as "winbb.exe" in your Baseball for Windows directory.  WinWiz will find it and allow the install process to continue.

5.  Transferring seasons, stadiums and managers from another computer
        A.  Copy all sub-directories ending in ".wdd" in the Baseball for Windows directory on the other computer to the Baseball for Windows directory on the Vista computer.
        B.  Copy all files starting with "fl-", "fe-" and "f-" in the Baseball for Windows directory on the other computer to the Baseball for Windows directory on the Visa computer.
        C.  Copy all files ending in ".dib" in the BBW directory on the other computer to the Baseball for Windows directory on the Visa computer.
        D.  Open the file "ma_bb.ini" in the "\windows" directory on the other computer using NotePad.  Find the section of the file beginning with "[DataDisks]".  Below this is a list of all the installed season disks.  Copy the contents of this section (the list of installed disks), open a New file in Notepad, paste the sections into the new file.  Save the file as "temp.ini". Also find the section of the file beginning with "[DataDiskRegistration]".  Copy this entire section, including the section title.
        E.  Copy "temp.ini" (from step 5D) to the Vista computer.  Open up "temp.ini" on the Vista computer with NotePad.  Copy the list of season disks.  Open up "ma_bb.ini" in the \windows directory of the Vista computer.  Paste into the "[DataDisks]" section.  Copy the entire "[DataDiskRegistration]" section from "temp.ini".  Paste into "ma_bb.ini".  Save "ma_bb.ini".  Your season disks will now be availbble in Baseball for Windows.

6.  Move the sound files and Ernie to the hard drive.

        A.  Copy the "\harwell" and "\sfx" directories from the Baseball for Windows CD to the hard drive.  You can put them anywhere, but I usually put them in subdirectories of Baseball for Windows.
        B.  Open up "ma_bb.ini" in the "\windows" directory.  Find the line in the "[BASEBALL]" section that reads:
AudioDirectories=C:\APBA_BBW\AUDIO;C:\APBA_BBW\TABLES;D:\HARWELL;D:\SFX .
The red letters are drive letters.  C:\ is the drive to which Baseball for Windows was installed and D:\ is the CD Rom Drive.  Letters in your file may be different.
Copy and Paste the line so that you now have two identical lines.  Put a ";" in front of one of them.  Change the other to read:
AudioDirectories=C:\APBA_BBW\AUDIO;C:\APBA_BBW\TABLES;C:\APBA_BBW\HARWELL;C:\APBA_BBW\SFX .
The specific entries for Harwell and SFX may vary on your computer, but they are the directories to which you copied Harwell and SFX.

7.  At this point everything is installed and should be working except for the Help files.  Vista does not natively support WinHelp32 files.  Microsoft has provided a fix for this.  The download for the fix can be found here.  Click on the "Continue" button there to start the process of downloading the fix.  Even after the fix, macros will not work in Help files, so you may still error messages when trying to use the file, although the Help file pages should all be available individually.  Note that if you have access to an XP computer, you can just copy "winhlp32.exe" from the XP \windows directory to the Vista computer.  I recommend not putting it into the Vista \windows directory but into its own directory.  To associate the old version help files with this program, navigate to "winbb.hlp" in the Baseball for Windows directory, right-click on it and select "Open With...", then "Choose Program".  Use the "Browse" button to navigate to "winhlp32.exe", select it, check the box "Always use this program to open this kind of file" and then click "OK".

8.  When installing MakoJo Software programs, unzip the installation bundle.  Right click on "setup.exe" and choose "Run as Administrator". If you get any messages telling you that a file being installed is older than the existing file, answer "Yes" keep the existing file.

9.  Installing MakoJo Software programs
        A.  Place a copy of vbrun300.dll into the \windows\system directory of the Vista computer.
        B.  Unzip the downloaded zip file.  Right click on "setup.exe" and choose "Run as Administator".
        C.  Do NOT install these programs into C:\Program Files\...   If Vista User Account Control (UAC) is ON,  the programs will not be able to write to their .ini files (Vista aggressively protects C:\Program Files\...
        D.  You may get an error message that COMMDLG.DLL cannot be installed.  There are two solutions to this.
                1.  Use Windows Vista to "Take Ownership" of COMMDLG.DLL and assign ownership to the Administrators Group.  Set the permissions for the file to "All".
                2.  For those of you to whom #1 sounds just a little too daring (and that's probably most of you), you can use the alternate setup program available on my web site. if you experience a problem with the normal setup.exe program.
